La Brea Tar Pits and Museum

The La Brea Tar Pits is the world’s only consistently-active, urban Ice Age excavation site filled with ground sloths, towering mammoths, and snarling saber-toothed cats.

Visitors can watch scientists prepare specimens in the Fossil Lab, and then see fossils on display in surrounding galleries.

A popular exhibition—Mammoths and Mastodons at La Brea Tar Pits—allows visitors to get up close to real fossils and life-sized models and real specimens of Ice Age giants.

For an additional fee, check out Ice Age Encounters to experience this dynamic, 15-minute show featuring a life-size adult Saber-toothed Cat puppet, a live performance, and film projections that bring the distant past to life.

Kidsguide Parenting Tip: LA County residents receive free museum admission 3-5 p.m. daily. Tickets are available at any museum ticketing desk or kiosk.
