La Brea Tar Pits and Museum

The La Brea Tar Pits is the world’s only consistently-active, urban Ice Age excavation site. Visitors can watch excavators unearth remains of plants and animals. Inside the museum, staff clean and sort fossils in the see-through Fossil Lab. The results, including saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, and dire wolves, are on display.

The museum’s latest exhibition—Mammoths and Mastodons at La Brea Tar Pits—allows visitors to get up close to real fossils and life-sized models and real specimens of Ice Age giants.

Visit their website for details on their Youth & Teen programs.

L.A. County Residents get free museum admission from 3-5 pm. Advanced, timed-tickets are recommended.
