Your Guide to Beach Bonfires in LA & Orange County – Southern California

Updated: Summer 2026

Sunny days at the beach are great, but there’s something extra special about staying past sunset for a bonfire. The SoCal coast has some of the best fire pit beaches in the country, and families make the most of them all summer long.

From Playa del Rey to San Clemente, we’ve rounded up the beaches where you can roast s’mores, warm up under the stars, and let the kids stay up just a little past bedtime.

A few things to know before you go: most fire pits are first-come, first-served and get claimed early on peak summer days. Bring your own firewood or charcoal (depending on the beach), and always check the specific rules for each location since they vary. Here’s where to find the best fire pits along the LA and Orange County coast.

Dockweiler State Beach

12001 Vista del Mar, Playa del Rey
🔥 40 Fire Pits

Dockweiler is one of the few LA beaches where you can actually have a bonfire, and families love it for exactly that reason. About 40 fire pits are located in front of the Dockweiler RV Park and the first two parking lots off the Imperial Highway entrance. All fire pits are first-come, first-served. You can bring your own grill or BBQ, but it must fit inside the 2-foot-wide fire pit.

Bolsa Chica State Beach

17851 PCH, Huntington Beach
🔥 200 Fire Pits

One of the most popular beaches in Orange County, Bolsa Chica has 200 fire rings up for grabs on a first-come, first-served basis. During peak season, fire pits get claimed very early in the morning, so plan to arrive early. Fire rings can also be reserved with a picnic area. Only coal and wood may be used; charcoal grills are not allowed, though propane is okay.

Huntington City Beach

Huntington Beach
🔥 127 Fire Pits

Huntington City Beach stretches 3½ miles and features 127 fire pits located from south of First Street to Beach Blvd. Barbecues must be set up within 6 feet of a fire pit and off the sand. The beach also has an all-inclusive playground, making it a great full-day spot for families. Want to check how crowded it is before you head out? Live webcam views are available online.

Huntington State Beach

21601 PCH, Huntington Beach
🔥 200+ Fire Pits

Huntington State Beach picks up where City Beach leaves off, extending two miles from Beach Boulevard south to the Santa Ana River. Together, the two beaches form an impressive 6-mile stretch of coastline. The state provides over 200 first-come, first-served fire rings; some can also be reserved with a picnic area. Only coal and wood may be used; no charcoal grills, though propane is permitted if kept at least 18 inches off the ground.

Balboa Pier & Corona del Mar State Beach

1 Balboa Pier / 3001 Ocean Blvd., Newport Beach
🔥 47 Fire Pits (Balboa Pier area) + 24 Fire Pits (Corona del Mar)

Newport Beach offers fire rings at two locations: near Balboa Pier and at Corona del Mar State Beach. The Balboa area has wood-burning and charcoal-only rings on both sides of the pier, with several ADA-accessible options at each. Corona del Mar adds 16 wood-burning and 8 charcoal-only rings, also with ADA access. Because these rings sit close to nearby homes, the city limits wood smoke impact; green rings are charcoal-only while unpainted rings accept clean wood or charcoal.

Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort

1131 Back Bay Drive, Newport Beach
🔥 8 Wood-Burning Fire Pits

The fire pits near Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort are open to the public, so you don’t have to be a guest to enjoy them. Families staying on-site can also rent a fire pit from the Marketplace and have it delivered right to their campsite, making it an especially easy option for overnight visitors.

Crystal Cove State Beach

15 Crystal Cove, Newport Coast
🔥 Propane Fire Pits Only

Crystal Cove allows fire pits on the beach and in the Moro Campground, but propane burning only; charcoal and wood are strictly prohibited. No fires at all are permitted in the back-country wilderness area on the inland side of PCH. If you’d rather not haul equipment, The Beachcomber Cafe at Crystal Cove rents propane fire pits for 3-hour sessions.

San Clemente Beaches

San Clemente
🔥 Limited Fire Pits

Fire pits in San Clemente are limited, but they do exist. You can find them at the San Clemente Pier, North Beach, and T-Street Beach. Check the city’s beach policies before you go for the most current rules and availability.

Laguna Beach

Aliso Beach, Lost Pier Cafe

🔥 Fire Pits for Rent

Lost Pier Cafe rents portable fire pit packages for use near the cafe on Aliso Beach.

Pack the s’mores ingredients, grab a blanket, and stake your spot early. A beach bonfire night is one of those summer memories kids talk about for years.
