Chuck Jones: Season of Creativity – Community Art Events at Orange County Great Park in Irvine

NOW – SEPTEMBER 12

Chuck Jones: Season of Creativity is an exhibition designed to explore the process of animation from script to screen through original art, writing, and other ephemera created by Chuck Jones. Visit the Orange County Great Park Gallery now through September 12 to learn how Jones helped bring to life some of the most famous Warner Bros. characters including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Marvin the Martian, Wile E. Coyote, and Road Runner.

The Great Park Gallery is open noon – 4 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free. Visit ocgp.org/arts for more information on the exhibition.

Community Art Events

Enjoy free family-friendly events at the Orange County Great Park that will inspire your creativity and teach you more about the work of Chuck Jones. No registration is needed, and all ages are welcome. Drop-in activities are available while supplies last.

 

Saturday Morning Cartoons & Drawing

Orange County Great Park Artist Studios

Meet up at the Orange County Great Park Artist Studios for a morning of cartoons and drawing! Participants will learn how to draw some of Jones’ world-famous cartoon characters with the guidance of teaching artists from the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity. Event includes coloring sheets and other creative opportunities. No registration is needed for this drop-in activity; available while supplies last.

 

Chuck Jones Big Draw

Sunday, September 5, 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
Orange County Great Park Palm Court Arts Complex

Participants of all ages will be able to participate in creativity stations throughout the Palm Court Arts Complex at the Orange County Great Park. Activities include a Chuck Jones Doodle Wall, Termite Terrace Character Drawing, and Acme Animation Experience, where participants can collaborate on personalized stop-motion animated short cartoons using some of Chuck Jones’s favorite characters. All ages. No registration is needed for this drop-in activity; available while supplies last.

 

Chuck Jones Lecture & Film Series

Learn more about Chuck Jones’ career and his impact on the world of animation, and enjoy showings of classic cartoons. Lecture and film series events are held at the Orange County Great Park Hangar 244. They are free and open to the public, with no reservations needed. All ages are welcome.

“The History of Chuck Jones”
A Tribute to an American Genius
Sunday, September 5, 1-3pm

In this lecture, Chuck’s grandson, Craig Kausen, will lead you through the seven decades-long career of Jones, a four-time Academy Award-recipient in a multi-media exploration of the creative genius that fueled Jones’ career and life. In addition, Jones’ cartoons, such as What’s Opera, Doc? and Bully for Bugs will be shown as well as his Academy Award-winning cartoon The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics.

Recreational Classes

Enjoy a variety of family-friendly activities in cartooning, sewing, crafting, and more celebrating Season of Creativity. Activities are held at various City of Irvine facilities, and fees and ages vary by program. Registration is required for the activities noted below at yourirvine.org.

 

Acme Inventor

Fridays, July 23–August 13, 2–3 p.m.
Quail Hill Community Center

In this STEAM class, students will learn about simple machines using everyday materials to create amazing inventions. Ages 10–13.

 

Third Dimension

Thursdays, August 5–26, 2–3 p.m.
Quail Hill Community Center

Explore three-dimensional construction while creating art from different types of materials. Ages 7–10.

 

Elements of Comedy for Kids

Fridays, August 20–September 10, 2–3 p.m.
Quail Hill Community Center
Tuesdays, September 14–October 5, 3–4 p.m.
Las Lomas Community Center

Learn fundamentals of comedy such as improvisation, stock characters, joke writing, caricature, and more. Ages 8–13.

 

Intro to Character Development

Tuesday, September 14, 3:30–5 p.m.
Las Lomas Community Center

Draw a few of the most famous cartoon characters ever created and delve into how characters are developed through storyboard techniques. Ages 8–13.
