We’re sure you know Memorial Day is a time to remember, and appreciate, the brave men and women who have lost their lives in order to protect ours and what better way to honor them than by spending it with the ones you hold dear.
Whether you have a loved one in the Armed Forces or not, this Memorial weekend relish in the smiles and laughter of your family because we’ve got ten exciting events that will come in under $10!
5/29/17: Start your day off by taking the kids to a flag raising ceremony honoring fallen members of the military. And although this ceremony might lack in the excitement department, it’s a great way to start a conversation with your little ones about the meaning behind Memorial Day! Monday, 10 – 11 a.m.
5/29/17: Join the Woodlawn Cemetery as local civic groups and dignitaries help celebrate Memorial Day. Highlights include a Condor Squadron military flyover and music by the John Adams Middle School Choir and the Santa Monica Oceanaires. Enjoy a “Movie in the Mausoleum,” and other activities following the ceremony. Food will be available for purchase and free parking can be found at Santa Monica College’s Lot 4 at the corner of 16th St. & Pico Blvd. Santa Monica College’s Parking Lot 6 at 14th St. & Pico Blvd. is $5. There will be shuttle service from both lots and the Elks Lodge at 1040 Pico Blvd. to the Cemetery. There will be limited street parking so arrive early! Monday, 11 a.m.
5/27/17: During this special evening, hatch grunion eggs, participate in grunion arts and crafts, watch a classic grunion video, interact with grunion researchers, touch live tidepool animals and see the many fish and other live animals in the aquarium. After participating in fun grunion activities, everyone heads to the beach to observe the enchanting fish. Wear warm clothing and remember to have fun! This will be a night your family won’t soon forget! Saturday, 8 p.m. – midnight.
5/29/17: Pile in the car and head over to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) because this Memorial Day visitors of all ages are invited to a free day at the museum with bilingual tours, family sketching activity, and live music at 12:30 and 2:45 pm. NOTE: Target Free Holiday Monday excludes admission to specially ticketed exhibitions. To ensure a safe and pleasant visitor experience, tickets to the Boone Children’s Gallery on Target Free Holiday Monday will be timed and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Pick up your free, timed ticket in the Boone Children’s Gallery on the day of the event. Timed tickets allow for a 30-minute visit. Monday, 11 a.m.
5/28/17: What better way to enjoy each other than over good food and tons of fun? Join the city of Villa Park for a car show, free pontoon boat rides, carnival games, a petting zoo, stolling magician, a bounce house, music, and more! Families dressed in Patriotic attire wins prizes so get out your gear Kidsguiders! Villa Park High. Sunday, 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
5/28/17: One picnic option not enough? We’ve got two! Enjoy a little rest and relaxation with family and friends on the beautiful grounds of the Homestead. Bring your own picnic, find a shady spot, and don’t miss out on a variety of games and special surprises. No reservation required. Traditional picnic setups only (no umbrellas, popups, grills, radios, or access to electricity). And no alcohol or pets. Sunday, 12 – 4 p.m.
5/27/17: Join the Jedi for a one-day event at Victoria Gardens featuring readings by Darth Vader and Chewbacca, live performances by Jedi Elvis and the Claremont Orchestra, a light saber duel, crafts, and games. Don’t forget your costumes to compete for the title of best in the galaxy and parents don’t forget your phones because you’ll want to take loads of pictures of this! Saturday, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
5/27/17-5/29/17: The Santa Anita Park Infield transforms into the Santa Anita Carnival on Memorial Day weekend. Bring the family out to enjoy thrilling rides, delicious carnival snacks, challenging carnival games and more. Admission and parking is free, and you can purchase a $10 unlimited ride wristband here. Saturday – Monday, 12 – 7 p.m.
5/27/17-5/29/17: Beat the heat, grab the sunscreen and head over to the Sigler Splash Pad to enjoy ten-foot-tall pelicans, palm trees and sea horses spout water all over! You can even take a picnic lunch to enjoy after the water fun because what goes together better than sandwiches and water play? Saturday- Monday, Noon – 5 p.m.
5/27/17: Splash pad not for you? Take a trip down to the coast and watch robots take over the aquarium at the annual Robotics Day. Watch demonstrations from local high school robotics clubs and learn about land and underwater ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles). You can even drive an underwater ROV through an obstacle course and discover how scientists use ROVs to explore the ocean! Saturday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.
