Things to do before you say “see ya!” to summer

summer sunIt’s not too late to get the last of your summer on before the kids hightail it back to school. Below’s our Top 5 must-do activities before it all ends:

Bonfire at the beach. California truly becomes dreamy when you watch the sun set over the ocean. Don’t forget the s’mores and campfire stories. Find the nearest bonfire-friendly beach near you here.

Visit Splash! Sprawled over 18 acres of La Mirada Regional Park, Splash! is home to the popular Buccaneer Bay and its collection of water slides, play structures, and three kinds of pools, including a zero-entry pool for kiddies. The best part? The admission price.

Backyard campout. It’s close and feels like home. Don’t know where to start? Get some ideas here.?

Catch an outdoor concert. Pack a picnic, grab a grassy spot and enjoy the last of these free annual public events. Check your local parks and recreation department, or Kidsguide’s own compilation of area summer concert schedules.

Catch an outdoor movie. On the beach, natch! Newport Dunes’ Movies on the Beach is offered until Sept. 5, while Huntington Beach Pier’s free Movies on the Pier series concludes tonight with the DreamWorks hit “Monsters vs. Aliens.”

Here’s a homemade hummus recipe that’s both nutritious and delicious. Pair it with pita bread, grilled tortillas, or a side of favorite veggies for a refreshing snack.

Zucchini Hummus
(Serving size: 4)

INGREDIENTS: 1 15-ounce can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed; 1 green zucchini, chopped; 1 garlic clove, chopped; 1/4 cup of parsley; 1/4 cup basil; salt; freshly ground pepper; 1/4 cup of olive oil; and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until desired consistensy is reached.
2. Enjoy!
