How To Treat a Long Day
The summer solstice is the longest day of the year

summer solstice

We’ve all had days that dragged and nights that felt like a blink.
Oh, just wait until this weekend.
The summer solstice, literally the longest day and shortest night of the year,?begins?at the tail end?of Saturday for us on the West Coast. The Earth’s North?Pole will be tilted 23 1/2 degrees towards that?sun – meaning the northern hemisphere will receive most of the Sun’s light.
Here are some neat facts about the summer solstice:
? The summer solstice marks the official start of summer. This year, astronomers put the start of the solstice at 11:45 p.m. PST (Sunday, 1:45 a.m. EDT).
? The word “solstice” finds its root in two Latin words: “sol” for sun, and “sistere,” to stand still.
? Many ancient cultures celebrated the solstices, including the summer solstice.?Structures such as Stonehenge and Machu Picchu are believed to be monuments dedicated to watching the sun and other celestial bodies.
? On Saturday, there?will?be?24 hours of daylight north of the Arctic Circle?and 24 hours of darkness south of the Antarctic Circle.
