A Taste of Community Tradition ?
Now, here’s a party with history!
cypress community festivalAs far as community parties go, Cypress’ takes the cake.

See what the fuss is all about this weekend at the 29th Annual Cypress Community Festival, the party that traces its roots to the city’s incorporation nearly three decades ago.

This free event, expected to draw some 20,000 annually, has plenty to showcase. Feeling physical? Start the day by joining the 5K/10K run/walk. Local Kiwanis Club members will treat attendees to a hot pancake breakfast – just the thing to set you up for a day of games, arts & crafts activities, an antique car show, a nd a baseball vs. softball game.

Nibble and see how much spice you can take at its award-winning chili and salsa cook-offs, where family recipes vie for the title of most delicious. For a minimal $5 fee, spectators can become tasters, sampling the contests’ various delicious entries.

Test Your Taste Buds
?
Is there a link between sight, scent and taste?

little girl with candyOur tongues can detect only five kinds of taste – bitter, sweet, sour, salty and umami. This simple science experiment courtesy of Children’s Science Experiments, is a sweet activity for younger kids.? This can also work as a fun group game.

Wake Up Taste Buds
Materials: Blindfolds or scarves; various foods and drinks of choice (sugar cubes, ice cream, different fruits, lemon juice, milk, etc.*); small containers for your foods, spoons to dish out your solids and straws for your liquids.

Let the tasting begin!
1. Blindfold your friends. It’s important that they don’t see the foods before testing begins!

2. Place one food at a time on each person’s tongue and
see who can guess the items that have been used. Use the straws as
droppers and not for sipping by placing the straw in the liquid
and positioning your thumb over the top of the straw to trap a
drop or two of the liquid.

3. Ask your volunteers to pinch their nose as you place a food
item on their tongue and ask if they can guess what item of food
it is.

Let the questions roll!
1. How well did your sense of smell kick in when your
sense of sight and sense of touch were not in use?

2. Did any of the above foods taste better or worse
with the blind fold on?

3. Did you notice that your tongue discovered the different
textures more?

4. Did you notice that your tongue sensed sweet,
salty, bitter and sour foods on different parts of your tongue?

* When choosing the foods and liquids for your experiment,
select a variety of sweet, salty, sour and bitter flavors, as well as different textures: granules, solids, liquids,
smooth and rough.
