What a finish! Kidsguide Challenge 2010 is at an end, but it’s just the beginning. Prepare for fall’s Science Experiment Challenge!
Kidsguide Magazine Online
Sept. 1, 2010

When we said “share,” Kidsguide readers out-did themselves in our first summer challenge! Kidsguide Challenge 2010 concluded with record-number entries, capping off an endless summer of new adventures and experiences for the readers who gladly shared their stories, pictures and even tips. Thanks, everyone, for making the contest such a success.

If you enjoyed this challenge, stay tuned for fall’s Science Experiment Challenge. More details to come when the Fall/Winter Kidsguide hits stands later this month!

Week 12 (Animals) winner Michele Garcia’s entry caught our attention. Read on to learn why:

“My four kids have been hounding me for a puppy for over a year now (no pun intended). I told them, they have a dog, and if they want another one they are going to have to save their money to buy it themselves. Thinking this would bide me some time in taking on the huge responsibility of a puppy. So as the summer started we were thinking of things to keep them busy.

I suggested they start a pet service. My oldest daughter Sophie (10) has been taking care of the neighbors pets when they leave out of town for awhile now so I thought it would be perfect for them. They could save money and stay out of my hair. :) They made flyers and passed them out around the neighborhood. We are lucky to live next door to a couple of great neighbors who hired the kids.

The kids spent time picking up dog business, bathing dogs and pet sitting. They earned over $50 this summer! I am so proud of their entrepreneurial spirit and although summer distractions slowed business down, they did/do a great kjob when the opportunities arose/arise. Their “puppy fund” has been nearly depleted now (whew!) due to typical summer expenses like ice cream and candy, but they did get to spend time with a great dog named Frankie and an elderly cat named Marley. They worked hard and weren’t scared to get their hands dirty. I am so proud of them!”

We also couldn’t resist and awarded an Honorable Mention to Chris Young for the colorful photography submitted for the challenge (See above). The Young family spent a day at San Pedro, where they stopped at picturesque Point Fermin, explored its marine environment, waded in tide pools, got close to marine critters, and hit scenic Ports O’ Call for lunch.
