Saturday Morning Concert Series in Santa Monica

Saturdays: Books and Cookies invite local children’s musicians and music teachers to play a Kids Concert. Concert sets last about 30 minutes, and are lively, interactive, and fun.

Pan for Gold at the Autry

Weekends and second Tuesdays: Eureka! Learn how to pan for gold, just like the 49ers did during the California gold rush, at an outdoor re-creation of a miner’s panning station.

Sigler Park Splash Pad

Weekends, May 27 – June 18 and daily, June 24 – September 4: Splash Pad water features include ten-foot-tall pelicans, palm trees and sea horses.

Butterfly Pavilion at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles

March 19 – September 4: The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHMLA) has re-designed and re-built its popular outdoor Butterfly Pavilion exhibit.

Weekend Scenic Train Excursions in Fillmore

Saturdays: Take a four-hour, round-trip train ride through the citrus and avocado groves of the Heritage Valley on board vintage 1930’s passenger and dining cars.

Dig It! Archaeology Adventures at the Skirball

Weekends: In a hands-on, simulated dig, kids experience the ancient Near East, learning methods for excavating a site and the importance of preserving archaeological artifacts.

Apple Computer Classes

Ongoing: Apple stores offer free computer classes (5+) teaching the basics of Macs and their software. Classes fill quickly. Locations: Brea, Cerritos, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Mission Viejo and Newport Beach.

Free Archery Instruction at El Dorado Park

Saturdays: Get pointers to improve skills, and consistent shooting technique. Equipment provided. Saturday classes include, advanced, 9 a.m. and beginner 10:30 a.m. Safety class required.

Dolby Theatre Guided Tours

Daily: See an Oscar statuette, visit the Dolby Lounge and other celebrity hot-spots, and see images from previous Academy Awards ceremonies.

Bob Baker Marionette Theater in Los Angeles

Weekends: The audience is always part of the show when the world famous Bob Baker Marionettes perform in-the-round.

Garden Grove’s 59th Annual Strawberry Festival

May 26-29: A strawberry soire with carnival rides, contests, games, Showmobile, food booths, celebrity guests and a 5K run and parade on Saturday.

Pan For Gold Make an Adobe Brick and Arrowhead Necklaces at the Mission

Saturday and Sunday: Try your luck at finding the gold in the custom-designed Mission trough. They’ll supply the pan and the “gold” kids roll up their sleeves and pan their way to riches.

Robotics By the Sea in San Pedro

May 27: Robots take over the aquarium at the annual Robotics Day. Watch demonstrations from local high school robotics clubs and learn about land and underwater ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles).

Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program

May 16 – September 5: Kids read any eight books, record them, and bring the completed journal to any Barnes & Noble store to receive a free book.

Grunion Fishtaval at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium

May 27: During this special evening, hatch grunion eggs, participate in grunion arts and crafts, watch a classic grunion video, interact with grunion researchers, touch live tidepool animals and see the many fish and other live animals in the aquarium.
