4-H Youth Development Program

Los Angeles and Orange County programs (5-19) offer guidance in good citizenship, leadership and life skills through projects and community service.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters

Local branches match boys and girls with adult mentors who provide friendship and guidance. Volunteers are extensively screened. Catholic Big Brothers offer bilingual, deaf and hearing-challenged programs.

Boy Scouts of America

Cub Scouts (grades 1-5) and Boy Scouts (grades 6-12) participate in a variety of activities and earn badges. Cub Scouts tie knots, set up a tent, cook at a campfire and more.

Boys and Girls Clubs

Supervised activities (5-18) after school and during school vacations (see Camps), including crafts, field trips, homework help, and more.

Camp Fire

Long Beach Area Council – Programs include small club/groups, camps, arts and service programs. Inland Southern California Council – Orange County kids and teens participate in community service opportunities.

Cerritos College Community Education

Year-round classes in piano (6-14, 3 levels), guitar (8-13), Community Band and Community Orchestra (10+), plus math tutoring.

City Recreation Departments

Most city recreation departments offer youth group activities and family programs. See Recreation Departments and Colleges for contact information.

Girl Scouts

Girls (grades K12) unleash their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk Taker, Leader) through engaging, challenging, and fun activities.

Girls Inc. of Orange County

Year-round programming for girls (grades K-12) focusing on academic achievement, life skills, and personal development.

Jewish Community Centers

The following centers offer enrichment classes, preschools, family events, support groups, vacation-break camps and teen-specific programming.

Lakewood Recreation and Community Services

Check out the variety of programs offered by the City of Lakewood: sports, cooking, dance, musical theater, and lots more.

Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine

Hundreds of classes and programs for kids, teens and adults – many of which are free!

North Orange Continuing Education

Locations in Anaheim, Cypress and Fullerton offer a variety of classes for kids and teens, ranging from academics and sports to the arts.

Police Activities League (PAL)

Year-round youth (5-17) program sponsored by police departments. Activities include arts and crafts, sports, computers, community service, homework help and field trips.

Power 4 Youth

Middle-school students are matched with a volunteer for one-on-one academic mentoring at supervised locations in Lakewood and Long Beach.


Programs for the entire family include child-care, fitness, teen clubs, day and resident camps (see Camps), youth sports, aquatics and gymnastics.
