It’s summer, and road trips are on the agenda! But what if we told you that you can have your trip without having to drive?! That’s right! We’ve rounded up 7 super fun ways to enjoy a family outing sans car. (Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too. 🙂 )
Planning a trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific? What better way to get there than by sea! You can hop on the Aqua Link at Alamitos Bay Landing and also enjoy the Aqua Bus as it travels between 5 different locations near the Aquarium. The Aqua Link will only set you back $5 each way, and children under two are free. The Aqua Bus is a steal at only $1 each way and children under two are also free. Click here to see their routes and boarding times.
2. Balboa Ferry
Craving some good old-fashioned family fun, or maybe a frozen banana from Dad’s? Catch the The Balboa Ferry and travel across the water to Balboa Fun Zone. It’s got everything you need to put a smile on all of your faces: a ferris wheel, yummy treats and even whale watching. Adult fare is only $1, children (5-11) are $0.50 and children 5 and under are free. You can even bring your vehicle with you for an inexpensive rate but cars are so out of season right now! 😉 Click here to view their hours.
We’re really excited about this next one because it’s new! The Balboa Trolley was created so that visitors (and locals) could move about the peninsula without having to worry about parking. The trolley service is going on through September 3, 2017 and it’s completely free! Talk about an outing on a budget! Click here to view the schedule and more information.
Skip the parking and cost of gas, and take a day trip to a museum, beach, or amusement park on the Metro Link. It has over 20 destinations (which you can view here) and you can calculate the cost here. Amtrack also offers short day trips to San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and other cities. You can check out their pricing and schedules here.
Another one of our favs has to be The Metro Railway, which serves the Los Angeles County Area and is only $1.75 per person with children under 5 riding for free. Their trains run several times a day plus they offer a trip planner on their site that helps families figure out which popular destination to hit next. From museums to cultural hot spots, the possibilities are endless! Find out how you can ride here.
If you’re looking for a taste of the wild west, look no further! The Filmore and Western Railway Co. offers themed dinner rides plus weekend excursions that are fun for the whole family. This summer, it’s all about honey and you can head to Bennett’s Honey Farm on select Saturdays and Sundays for $12-26. Find more of their events and pricing here.
Getting to Catalina Island can cost a pretty penny but not if you travel on The Catalina Flyer. From now until December 3, 2017, you can save $21 off adult prices which makes their prices almost half the price of their competitors! But wait there’s more! 🙂 You can pack lunches, and even take your bikes aboard the boat for an extra $7 – that way you can make the most of your visit without breaking the bank! You can view their schedule and all other info here.
