5 Benefits of Reading to Your Child!

Posted Tuesday, November 28th, 2017

Did you know that November is National Family Literacy Month?!
To celebrate, we’ve put together our top 5 reasons you should be reading to your
child as often as possible! Because you know here at Kidsguide,
we love our books! 😉

1. Build Their Understanding

Reading to your tot is one of the most effective ways to build the “language” neural connections in their growing brain…in layman’s terms, they’ll have higher receptive vocabularies! A study in Rhode Island Hospital compared two groups of eight month olds and found that the group who was read to showed a 40% increase in understanding while their opposite had only a 16% increase. Psst…the library is a great place to start, and we have info for all of your favs in our Library Directory!

2. Open the Doorway to Writing

Out of reading comes writing, and we can’t write until we can read (think on that one for a minute 🙂 )! Once your little one has a full grasp of language and understanding, it will be easier for them to construct sentences/stories, and they’ll have more confidence using words they’re unfamiliar with or scared of.

3. Enhance Their Concentration

While you may think it is useless reading to a toddler who wants to constantly turn pages, swap books, or throw them around altogether, reading with your little one can help them learn to concentrate and sit still for longer periods of time. They’ll learn an appreciation for knowledge and books and trust us when we say, it’s time well invested! If you need some help in this area or aren’t sure where to start, check out our Tutoring and Academics line up!

4. Develop Their Empathy

Ever read your favorite novel, or watch your top show, and feel like you can directly relate to the main character? Kids can do that too, and this feeling can help them develop empathy. They identify with characters, and feel what they’re feeling. Not to mention, they’ll learn to better understand emotions!

5. Nurture Their Imagination

One of our favorite benefits of reading with your little Kidsguider is that you can watch their imagination take flight. Once they relate to a character, setting, or plot they can begin to imagine what will come next. A lot like how we secretly want the two opposites to attract in our fav rom com. This continuation of the use of their creativity will help them not only during play time but also at school! Children who think creatively tend to test better on standardized tests!
