10 Free Things to Do in September!

Back-to-school can be expensive, and with fall right around the corner, we’re approaching the holiday season at light speed! Why not save some extra bucks by checking out one of these budget-friendly, yet super exciting, events? 😉

 


 

1. Civil War Reenactment in Huntington Beach 9/2 – 9/3
Central Park will host a two-day Civil War Reenactment and spectators will see real live cannon fire, hundreds of combatants in period costumes, historical figures, authentic battles, and meet with the soldiers in their camps! Saturday, battles at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.; Sunday, battles at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. 100% free!

 

2. Annual Car Show in Belmont Shore 9/10
Take the family on a blast to the past with more than 700 pre ’75 classic cars that line the entire mile of Second Street and 14 side streets. The largest one-day show on the West Coast with live music and raffles. Sunday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Oh, and can you guess? It’s free.

 

3. Mexican Independence Day in LA 9/10
No, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day but September 16 is! You learn something new everyday. 😉 Take the kiddos down to LA to celebrate Mexico’s independence from Spain with popular and traditional entertainment, cultural activities, historic displays, food, artisan exhibits and more. Sunday, 10 a.m. Free admission. Cesar Chavez Blvd. down to Gage Ave.

 

4. Coastal Cleanup Day in San Pedro 9/16
You can make a difference! Spend a morning with Cabrillo Marine Aquarium staff and other volunteers who care to improve our environment. Afterwards, wander through the aquarium to get a closer look at the animals and habitats you helped. Saturday, 9 a.m. – noon. Totally free but waivers are required. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.

 

5. Oceanside Harbor Days 9/16 – 9/17
Head to Oceanside for two event-filled days of sun, sand, and surf. The festival includes arts and crafts, food, a sandcastle competition, a boat-building and sailing competition, stage entertainment, military and public safety displays and more. Saturday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Sunday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Free, free, free (but food may cost you, because hey it’s food, so pack a picnic if you really wanna be a frugal fam 🙂 ).

 

6. San Juan Capistrano Greek Festival 9/16-9/17
Get your opa on and enjoy everything that Greek culture has to offer. From the delicious food and dance lessons, to church tours and a Greek marketplace you do not want to miss this event! Saturday-Sunday, 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. Free admission and parking.

 

7. Free Movie Under The Gun at the USS Iowa 9/22
It’s morphin’ time! Take the family down to the water, and enjoy a screening of “Power Rangers.” The movie (PG-13) will be shown on board the fantail of the Battleship IOWA overlooking the LA Waterfront. Guests are encouraged to dress appropriately (a.k.a it gets seriously cold by California standards) so bring jackets, blankets and outdoor chairs! Concessions will be available at a very inexpensive rate, and unfortunately, no coolers or outside food and beverages are allowed. Friday, 6 p.m. Free.

 

8. Smithsonian Museum Day with Free Museum Admissions 9/23
Everyone loves museums and even more than that, free things. Put them both together and you get free admission to some of your favorite places! More than 1,300 museums in all 50 states will waive their entry fees to patrons who have a Museum Day Live! ticket. You can download yours here and also find a participating museum near you. Saturday. Free.99. 🙂

9. Annual Banana Festival in Oxnard 9/30
This festival is bananas…literally! Enjoy live entertainment, waterside port tours, vendor marketplace, arts and crafts, auto pavilion, music and dance, a kids area, recipe contests, plus delectable banana desserts galore! In addition, festival goers can tour thorough the Port Pavilion’ showcasing the history and inner workings of the Port of Hueneme. Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Free admission and parking.

 

10. Wellness Festival in Brea 9/30
Wellness? Yes, friends wellness. It’s important to take care of your body (because we only get one…unless you’re the bionic woman) and to teach our kids to do the same! Join the city of Brea for a day of free medical screenings, fitness trends, healthy food samples, free massages and more. Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Free admission. Brea Community Center.
